Trumpets Did Announce
Trumpets Did Announce is a poem written by Guy Tucker, the main character, in An Unsafe Place: A love Story. It is a transitional piece for the character. If you have read any of his other pieces you should be able to feel the difference.
Trumpets Did Announce
There once was a foolish king
Who ruled a vast land
His grandiose vision
Was forged in the past of man
Trumpets would announce
When he entered the room
He made his subjects kneel
As his followers swooned
With his mighty pen
He signed into law
Slowly taking away
What so few of us saw
But a few did truly see
They raised up in voice
They talked in secret code
Of a life with more choice
Still, trumpets would announce
When he entered the room
He made his subjects kneel
As his followers swooned
The king heard rumors
Of the names he was called
He rounded up his subjects
He punished them all
He passed new laws
He amassed great forces
He yelled a battle cry
They mounted their horses
And trumpets would announce
When he entered the room
He made his subjects kneel
As his followers swooned
The king did prepare
For the greatest of wars
For respect must be acquired
On all lands and all shores
Still more and more whispered
They talked in small gatherings
New plans were amassed
New hopes and imaginings
And trumpets would announce
When he entered the room
Fewer subjects did kneel
Fewer followers did swoon
This caused quite a rage
In this man who was king
He quieted the news tellers
Poet and those who sing
The king could not quiet
The wise ones who saw
He sent in his great army
With raised fist and raised claw
And trumpets would announce
When he entered the room
Fewer and fewer did kneel
Fewer and fewer did swoon
A strange thing happened
When into battle his army was lead
The subjects brought wine and food
The army was well feed
A man stood and spoke
Brothers, no battle to fight
Eat with us, drink with us
Until the mornings new light
No trumpets did announce
When he entered the room
There was no one to kneel
There was no one to swoon
The King cried loud
But no one did listen
They were friends drinking wine
And staffing the kitchen
Swords were laid down
With spears they were melted
Ploughs are well forged
The king was forgetted
New trumpets did announce
As the masses did sing
In this land, all are welcome
Even the old king
No, that isn’t a typo in the second to last stanza. 🙂 When you see the musical, you will understand.
